ALOHA means hello and good bye.

It also means love and friendship.

For example: Aloha ‘oe (I love you) or even Aloha wau ia ‘oe (I love you)

It does not mean Mahalo.

Mahalo means, Thank You.

Aloha is often explained as follows:

A = Aloha = love, friendship, hello, goodbye

L = Lokahi = working together for a common goal, sticking together as friends, as family, as a nation

O= Ohana = family, not necessarily blood-related, everyone helps everyone, no one is left alone (remember the movie Lilo and Stitch: Ohana, means family, no one is left behind or forgotten)

H = Ho’oponopono = a problem is discussed and all sides are heard, eiyther there is an agreement after that or not, but after all that has been said and heard, no matter what, therer is ho’oponopono, people don’t talk about it any more (pomo ,eams righteous in Hawaii)

A = again, Aloha

The Meaning of Aloha

The Online Hawaiian Dictionary defines Aloha as:

love, affection, compassion, mercy, sympathyy, pity, kindness, sentiment, grace, charity; greeting, salutation, regards; sweetheart, lover, loved one; beloved, loving, kind, compassionate, loveable; to love, be fond of; to show kindness, mercy, pity, charity, affecdtion; to venerate; to remember with affection; to greet, hail.  Greetings!  Hello! Good-by!  Farewell!  Alas!

There is more …

If we break Aloha down into Hawaiian words we get the literal meaning:

Alo” means presence, front or face while “ha” means breath or to breathe or the breathe of life.

So, the literal meaning is ” In the presence of breath” or “In the face of breath” or “In the presence of the breath of life”.

“Aloha Spirit” is even in the “law books” as a guide for public officials about treating people with respect and caring while they perform their duties. While this is more of a guide than a law someone could get punished for, it reminds us all to follow the guidelines and live Aloha.

Aloha is still more than that though… Aloha is a way of life. Aloha is showing your love, caring and understanding not only for yourself, but for all of those around you.

Definition of Aloha Spirit State Law
contained in the Hawaii Revised Statutes (State Law):

[§5-7.5] “Aloha Spirit.”
(a) “Aloha Spirit” is the coordination of mind and heart within each person. It brings each person to the self. Each person must think and emote good feelings to others. In the contemplation and presence of the life force, “Aloha,” the following unuhi laula loa may be used:

“Akahai,” meaning kindness,
to be expressed with tenderness;

“Lokahi,” meaning unity,
to be expressed with harmony;

“Oluolu,” meaning agreeable,
to be expressed with pleasantness;

“Haahaa,” meaning humility,
to be expressed with modesty;

“Ahonui,” meaning patience,
to be expressed with perseverance.

These are traits of character that express the charm, warmth and sincerity of Hawaii’s people. It was the working philosophy of Native Hawaiians and was presented as a gift to the people of Hawaii.

“Aloha” is more than a word of greeting or farewell or a salutation.

“Aloha” means mutual regard and affection and extends warmth in caring with no obligation in return.

“Aloha” is the essence of relationships in which each person is important to every other person for collective existence.

“Aloha” means to hear what is not said, to see what cannot be seen and to know the unknowable

b) In exercising their power on behalf of the people and in fulfillment of their responsibilities, obligations and service to the people, the legislature, governor, lieutenant governor, executive officers of each department, the chief justice, associate justices, and judges of the appellate, circuit, and district courts may contemplate and reside with the life force and give consideration to the “Aloha Spirit.” [L 1986, c 202, §1]

Do something kind for someone today and show your Aloha Spirit!”

This was posted to give you an idea of what that one word means, and that it has been taken also to mean a “Way of Life”.  I always feel if more people would live their lives with the “Aloha Spirit” we would have less problems on the streets.  Living with the “Aloha Spirit” is a simple thought BUT not as easy to put forth.  WHY?  In our daily lives, we encounter other people which causes or create us to be angry, perhaps even hostile…we need to remain calm, and think of the bigger picture.  If we react in the negative manner, are we going to be happy with ourselves?  By lashing out, are we correcting the satuation or just making it worse?

Let me share a quote from Denis Waitley:
“Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed.  Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.”

Please do balance your life and live it with the “Aloha Spirit”, and share these thoughts with your friends…start your efforts towards creating “World Pease”.  The native Hawaiians lead a simple life but live life with great appreciation which is lacking now-a-days.  Let me leave you with live your life with the “Aloha Spirit!”

Sharing a poem written by Lucille Mederios, Makawao, Maui

The Spirit of Aloha

An Attitude and a way of life
And an important aspect of ones heart.
To eliminate all of life’s’ strife
And the children of this world will take part.

To be a part of everything alive
And everything is a part of each other.
People and the earth work together to survive.
The joys of sharing with one another.

Always having the feeling of unity and harmony
Acquiring the strength to find who you are.
To be one with Mother Nature’s symphony
And the joys of sharing the energy of ours.

Giving strength to the foundation of reality
Continuously and generously giving for self fulfillment.
The cycle of life from plants to humanity
The everlasting cycle created to continue life’s’ environment.
